You can play Wendel anonymously, which stores some aggregate data. Signing in is optional and stores a bit more, like your email and a nickname. We add no analytics scripts or tracking cookies, and never sell your data.
Playing without an account
- On your device. Your browser stores your puzzle progress, hint state, a random session and player id, and any nickname, room, or colour you pick. Clearing your browser data removes it.
- Each guess. We log the word, its language, the score, the timing, how it was entered, and your nickname and room code if you are in a room. It is tied to the random session id, not to your identity, and we use it to keep play fair and improve the game.
Analytics and cookies
We don't load Google Analytics or any other analytics script, and we set no advertising or tracking cookies. The only things stored in your browser are the game-state items above. Cloudflare, which hosts Wendel, sees your IP address and keeps basic, cookieless traffic and security metrics as part of serving the site.
Optional accounts
Signing in is optional. Today it lets you set a profile, the nickname, colour, and preferences shown in game. Creating your own rooms is coming later.
- Sign-in. Handled by Clerk, who store your email, name, profile image, and sign-in method (such as Google or GitHub).
- Our records. We store your account id, email, and the display name, nickname, colour, and preferences you choose.
Who we share data with
We do not sell your data. A few providers help run Wendel and receive only what they need:
- Cloudflare hosts the site and scores guesses that are not already in our word list.
- Clerk handles account sign-in.
Your choices
- Anonymous play. Clearing this site's browser storage removes everything held on your device.
- Accounts. You can edit your profile, export your data, or delete your account from the profile page; deleting removes what we hold for it.
- Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK, or California), you may have further rights. Contact us to help excercise them if needed and existing features aren't sufficient.
Keeping data
We keep game analytics data while it is useful for running and improving Wendel, and identifiable account data until you delete your account. What we no longer need is removed or aggregated as anonymous.
Children
Wendel is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. Contact us if you believe a child has provided personal data without parental consent and we will remove it.
Changes
If we change how we handle data, we will update this page and the date above.
